The next municipal and regional council elections will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
- How often are elections held?

Municipal elections are held every four years on the third Tuesday in November. The last municipal elections were held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. See the results of the 2021 election here.
In Denmark, the following types of elections can be held:
- Municipal (local) elections (every 4 years)
- Regional Council elections (every 4 years)
- Parliamentary elections (at least every 4 years)
- European Parliament elections (every 5 years)
Postal vote
You can vote by mail from Tuesday, October 7, 2025, through Friday, November 14, 2025.
- Can I vote by mail before election day?

In the 2025 municipal elections, you can vote by mail from Tuesday, October 7, 2025, until Friday, November 14, 2025.
If you are unable to attend on election day, you can cast your vote by attending a polling station. Citizen service before the election and postal vote.
You must have valid identification to vote (health card, passport or driver's license).
Postal voting is possible at Citizen Service in Gråsten, Nordborg or Sønderborg during regular opening hours and during the extra opening hours on November 1 and November 8 from 09 am to 12 pm at all 3 locations.
The last day to cast postal votes is Friday, November 14th from 09 am to 16 pm at Citizens' Service in Sønderborg.

- Are you unable to leave your own home?

If you are unable to leave your home, you can request to vote in your own home.
In the 2025 election, you can request to vote in your own home from Tuesday, October 21, to Thursday, November 6.
If you are eligible to vote in your own home, you and Citizen Service will arrange a time when you will be visited in your own home.

If you live in a care centre, you have the opportunity to cast a postal vote at the care centre.
Further information can be obtained from the care center/Borgerservice.In the 2025 municipal elections, postal voting at care centers can begin on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

Polling stations
- Where should I vote on election day?

There are 17 polling stations in Sønderborg Municipality. You can see which polling station you belong to on the polling card that is sent to you before the election.

At the Kongevej polling station in Sønderborg, there are special aids for people with disabilities. See more in the section on aids.

- Can I apply to be transferred to another polling station?

If you have a disability or reduced mobility, you have the opportunity to apply to be transferred to a different polling station in the municipality than the one you are affiliated with.
For the 2025 municipal elections, you can apply to be transferred to another polling station from Tuesday, October 21, 2025, by submitting a form (coming soon) or calling Citizen Service on tel. 88 72 40 06The deadline for applications is Monday, November 10, 2025 at 12 noon.
Aids for selection
Sønderborg Municipality provides various aids to ensure that everyone can participate in the election regardless of disability or reduced mobility.
- Are there aids if I have to vote by post?

There is a magnifying glass and a felt-tip pen at all postal voting places.
In Citizen Service in Sønderborg there will be a disabled voting box, a CCTV magnifier and a raise/lower table with free legroom so that a wheelchair user can position themselves at the table.
- Are there aids at the polling stations if I have a disability or reduced mobility?

At all 17 polling stations in Sønderborg Municipality, there are handicap-friendly ballot boxes equipped with a magnifying glass and a felt-tip pen.
At the polling station, Kongevej - Sønderborg, there will also be a ballot box with a CCTV magnifier and a raising / lowering table with free legroom, so that a wheelchair user can sit at the table.
If you want to use the facilities at the Kongevej polling station in Sønderborg and do not belong to this polling station, you must apply for admission to the polling station.

- When will I receive my voting card?

Voting cards will be sent out no later than 5 days before election day. For the 2025 municipal elections, this means that voting cards must be submitted for postal distribution no later than Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
If you have not received your voting card by Thursday, November 13, 2025, you can still vote. You just need to bring either your passport, driver's license or health card.

You can vote in elections in Sønderborg Municipality if you have permanent residence in the municipality and are over 18 years of age.
In addition, you must either:
- Have Danish citizenship
- Be a citizen of one of the other Member States of the European Union
- Be a citizen of Iceland or Norway
- Have had permanent residence in the Kingdom without interruption for the last 4 years prior to election day
- Be a British citizen who is registered as a resident in the Danish Civil Registry as of 31 January 2020 and has had continuous permanent residence in Denmark since then
- Can I run in the local elections?

To be eligible to run for municipal office, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be 18 years of age by election day at the latest.
- You must have Danish citizenship or be a citizen of another EU country, Iceland or Norway.
- You must have permanent residence in the municipality.
The deadline for submitting candidate lists for candidates who are not exempt from the requirement to collect signatures from a minimum number of contributors is Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 12 noon.

- How long can election posters be displayed?

For the municipal elections in 2025, the following rules apply for hanging election posters:
- Election posters may not be hung until Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 12 noon.
- Election posters must be taken down no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
The posters must not exceed 0,8 m² and must be hung up safely. The detailed rules on hanging election posters on public roads and private common roads in cities can be found in the road legislation.
Become a volunteer at the election
As a citizen of Sønderborg Municipality, you can register as a volunteer election officer or designated voter in the upcoming municipal elections.
- How can I become an election volunteer?

As a citizen of Sønderborg Municipality, you can register as a volunteer election officer/deputy in the upcoming elections if you are over 18 years of age and have Danish citizenship.
As an election director/election representative, you must, among other things:
- Help prepare the polling station
- Welcoming the voters
- Scan election cards
- Distribute ballots
- Stand at the voting booth and pull the curtain off/in front
- Ensure that the ballot is delivered to the ballot box
- Check counting ballots before they are distributed
- Assist with the vote counting in the evening
- Pack up materials when the evening is over
As an election officer/deputy, you are at a polling station all election day from 7.00:XNUMX a.m. until all votes have been counted and reported, and the room has been cleaned up. This is usually late in the evening or early at night.
