Home education

If you wish to homeschool your child, you must notify Sønderborg Municipality before homeschooling can begin.

In Sønderborg Municipality you have the opportunity to homeschool your child.

How do I apply for homeschooling for my child?

You apply for homeschooling for your child via the form at the top of the page.

In the form you must fill in information about:

  • Your child, who wants to be homeschooled
  • Where homeschooling should take place
  • Who will teach?
  • Contact information and CPR number of parents

Once Sønderborg Municipality has received your notification, you will be contacted by a supervisor. You will review the rules for homeschooling and arrange a time for the first supervisory visit.

What are the rules for homeschooling?

Your child must receive education from the calendar year in which the child turns 6. It is not a requirement that the education takes place in a school. As a parent, you can choose to be responsible for the education yourself.

Home education must be on par with what is generally required in primary school. This means that your child must have the same opportunities to progress in the education system as if they had attended primary school.

Homeschooling must, at a minimum, include teaching in Danish, arithmetic/mathematics, English, history/social studies and natural sciences.

It is a requirement that the language of instruction is Danish when teaching the subject Danish. There is no requirement for the language of instruction in the other subjects.

Who can homeschool my child?

As a parent, you decide how homeschooling is organized and what methods and materials will be used.

It is not a requirement that you teach your child yourself. The teaching can therefore be carried out by others, but you as a parent are still responsible for the teaching and are therefore also responsible for the costs of teaching materials, etc.

It is not possible to combine homeschooling with schooling. A homeschooled child cannot therefore be partially enrolled in a primary school or a free primary school.

According to the Danish Agency for IT and Learning, a home-schooled child cannot get a Uni Login.

Is homeschooling supervised?

Sønderborg Municipality supervises homeschooling to ensure that it meets the requirements of primary school.

The supervision generally takes place twice a year at home/at the place of education and includes:

  • Review of specific documentation for the teaching (materials, assignments, activity log, teaching plan, etc.)
  • Observation of teaching
  • Assessment of the child's professional position
  • Follow-up on any points of attention from previous inspections

The supervisor will prepare a supervision report after the visit. You will receive the supervision report for your child's homeschooling in your e-box.

If it is assessed that the homeschooling does not meet the requirements of primary school, or there is concern about your child's academic development, a follow-up inspection visit will be arranged, and a professional test may be initiated. If the homeschooling is then still assessed as inadequate, your child will subsequently have to be taught in a school where the teaching obligation can be fulfilled.

Can a homeschooled child still take the primary school leaving exams?

Your homeschooled child has the opportunity to take the primary school leaving exams. The exams take place at the child's district school.

A full final exam consists of tests in both 8th grade and 9th grade and includes:

  • 8th grade: 1 test in practical/music elective
  • 9th grade: 4 set tests + 1 pull-out test

You must notify the supervisor of your child's wish to take the test no later than December 1 of the school year in which the test takes place.

Homeschooled children in 8th and 9th grade have the opportunity to receive guidance about education and jobs from Youth Education GuideAs a parent, you must contact the Youth Education Guidance Service yourself.

How do I cancel my child's homeschooling?
